EATdrink: Motel Mexicola // Seminyak, BALI

Nestled amongst the coco palms and glassy swells of Seminyak, Bali, lives the tropical oasis known as Motel Mexicola. We had been driving past this place all week during our recent trip, and each time it looked more and more enticing with all of it’s colour and lights. As we entered the courtyard inside, by-passing the colourful shrine of what seemed to be a “deity of cool” (of whom they thank for tacos and tequila), it actually felt like we had travel to Mexico. Renowned Veracruzano “Jarocho” chef, Alejandro Urbina brings his “espirítu salvaje” to the plate in the form of proper flavour-filled tacos that will (in their words) “make all the nachos and grey burritos you’ve ever ate look like the decaying corpse of Hernán Cortés.” We went in the late afternoon when tacos were only on offer, though their menu also stars tostadas, aguachile, quesadillas and other legit antojitos (that’s tapas) in the evening. Also, if you like your drinks fancy, Nicolaza Que Pasa knows where to add the salt, where to put the tajín and exactly how much limon cabrone to use. This was definitely my favourite spot in Seminyak!
